Art of the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Paldea Evolved Expansion

Check out some of the stylings featured on the latest Pokémon TCG cards.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game continues its journey through the Paldea region with the second expansion of the series, Scarlet & VioletPaldea Evolved. You’ve likely opened a booster pack or two (or more!) from this latest expansion already, so hopefully you’ve taken a moment to admire the amazing artwork that adorns the cards you’ve discovered within. To help foster your appreciation, we’re going to take a look at some of these works of art right now.

Art by Scav

If you like your Pokémon bright and dynamic, the two cards in this expansion by the artist Scav are sure to catch your eye. Just check out Electrode here. The bold, black outlines around both the Pokémon and its environment help every element stand out, and the dramatic shading on Electrode—combined with its enthusiastically sinister expression—give this piece loads of personality. The long trail of electricity in Electrode’s wake and the dirt being kicked up as the Pokémon zooms towards the viewer creates a fantastic sense of speed and movement. On the subject of movement, Scav brings more to the Corviknight card. The air swirling around this Pokémon almost lets you feel the power behind the flapping of its massive wings. Here, the contrast between the dark Corviknight and its white, wintery setting help keep the Pokémon as the focal point of the card.

Cute, but Dangerous

There are all sorts of different-looking Pokémon, and let’s face it, some look more intimidating than others. Just because a Pokémon doesn’t appear dangerous, though, doesn’t mean you should let your guard down around them. Take Eiscue here. An adorable Pokémon, to be sure, but when we see it using the icy block on its head to shatter other blocks of ice? Well, we wouldn’t want to get in its way. Likewise for Pawmo. Sure, it seems like it would be super soft and cuddly, but it’s erupting with electricity! And it looks so happy about it! Tinkaton also looks very excited about the destruction it’s causing. Check out the sheer glee on this cutie’s face as it crushes a mountainside by swinging a 200+ lb. hammer like it was nothing. We’ll give this cute Pokémon a wide berth, thank you very much.

Serious Glare Intensifies

Sometimes you can read a Pokémon’s mood just by looking into its eyes. In this expansion, we noticed a few Pokémon that are flashing intense glares that give us a peek into their minds. Pineco’s steely gaze as it lurks outside the Groundblight Shrine on Socarrat Trail is doing more to keep us wary of venturing there than those chains on the door ever could. Frigibax, who stands at the edge of a rocky precipice and stares off into the icy distance, may not look as frightening as Pineco, but we can certainly see its determined nature. You can tell this Pokémon is ready for the long battle ahead. Then there’s Luxray. That wild, but singularly focused expression tells us that it’s not going to give an inch if you dare challenge it. Of course, the electricity radiating from its body helps to send that message, but can you honestly say you’d approach a Pokémon that was staring you down with those wild red and yellow eyes?

Flock Together

It’s always fun to see Pokémon TCG cards that feature multiple Pokémon in their artwork, and Scarlet & Violet—Paldea Evolved does not disappoint on that front. Wattrel has an attack called United Wings, which does more damage based on how many Pokémon in your discard pile have that same attack, so it’s only fitting that its card shows multiple Wattrel taking to the air. Multiple Murkrow can also be seen soaring over a city on its card, although we’re not sure if the lead Murkrow has been startled by the viewer or if it’s merely putting on a display for us. (And wait… does this card have the United Wings attack as well?) The Flamigo card is a sharp contrast to Murkrow—billowy clouds colorfully reflecting the sunlight, and these Pokémon appear far more serene. Flamigo’s Insta-Flock Ability, which lets you bring more Flamigo from your deck into your hand, ties into the theme, too. (Hold up… this card has the United Wings attack, too? We’re detecting a theme!)

Type: Wild

Now that the Pokémon TCG has entered the Paldea region, we’re obviously going to see more Paldean Pokémon, including regional variants of familiar Pokémon from other regions. Such is the case with Tauros. Originally discovered in the Kanto region, the Wild Bull Pokémon has three new breeds to be found in Paldea (and in this expansion!). This Fire-type Paldean Tauros is a Blaze Breed, and judging by its artwork, this is not a Pokémon to mess with. What’s more dangerous here: those pointy horns or the swirling flames? The Water-type Paldean Tauros is an Aqua Breed. It may not look as immediately terrifying, but that solid, wide stance and aggressive snort it’s giving makes it clear that it’s not a Pokémon to be trifled with. Finally, the Combat Breed, a Fighting-type Paldean Tauros, lives up to its name with a fearsome kick that decimates solid rock.

Pretty impressive artwork, right? Now’s a good time to look back at your Pokémon TCG collection to see what some of your favorite pieces are. Plus, with over 190 cards in the Scarlet & Violet—Paldea Evolved expansion, there are loads of other masterpieces to find.
