Bond over New Pokémon TCG Cards

TAG TEAM cards are back, including these two potent duos in the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds expansion.

There are a lot of incredible cards to be found in the latest Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion, Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds, and we can’t wait to start adding them to our decks. New Pokémon-GX, new Supporter cards, and of course, powerful new TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX! It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for some new cards to take down your next opponent or if you’re a collector who wants a cool new card featuring your favorite Pokémon—there’s something to get excited about here. Join us as we check out some of the incredible cards that you’ll find in the new Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds expansion!

Reshiram & Charizard-GX

Two winged wonders of the Pokémon world join forces to form an astonishing TAG TEAM. All three of Reshiram & Charizard-GX’s attacks have the potential to do unreal damage, with Double Blaze-GX being the most potent—it can do 300 damage that isn’t affected by any effects on its target. This means Reshiram and Charizard-GX can even damage Pokémon that are otherwise immune to attacks from Pokémon-GX. To cap it off, this TAG TEAM starts with 270 HP, meaning it could keep torching your opponents for a long time after it enters battle.

Lucario & Melmetal-GX

Looking for an ironclad way to add both offense and defense to your game? Check out Lucario & Melmetal-GX, which delivers decent damage and long-term protection for your Metal-type Pokémon. The Heavy Impact attack can do a consistent 150 damage, and its rather heavy Energy requirement is offset by the TAG TEAM’s other attack, Steel Fist, which lets you search up Energy. Lucario & Melmetal-GX makes an even more lasting impression with the Full Metal Wall-GX attack, which causes all of your Metal-type Pokémon to take 30 less damage from every attack your opponent throws at them for the rest of the game.

Venomoth-GX

Pile on extra damage or give yourself defensive cover when you combine Venomoth-GX’s Shinobi Mastery attack with one of the great Supporter cards in this expansion. Shinobi Mastery typically does 110 damage, but if you use the attack during the same turn you play Koga’s Trap, it does an impressive 200 damage instead. Alternatively, if you play Janine on the same turn, Shinobi Mastery will thwart counterattacks from Basic Pokémon during your opponent’s next turn. Venomoth-GX can also provide a double-digit payoff with its Ten-Card Return-GX attack—like the name suggests, you’ll return your hand to your deck and draw 10 fresh cards.

Koga’s Trap

Ensnare your foe with Koga’s Trap, which not only starts racking up damage by leaving your opponent’s Active Pokémon Poisoned—it also dazes the Pokémon by making it Confused. Koga’s Trap combines well with a number of cards in this expansion that benefit when your opponent’s Pokémon is affected by a Special Condition.

Lt. Surge’s Strategy

Listen up! When you’re falling behind, Lt. Surge has just what you need to get back in the game. Play Lt. Surge’s Strategy to play 3 Supporter cards in one turn (including Lt. Surge’s Strategy itself). The catch is you have to have more Prize cards remaining than your opponent. Supporter cards are the most powerful Trainer cards in the game, so this kind of extra muscle can be just what you need to charge ahead in the battle.

Dedenne-GX

If you need to recharge your hand, Dedenne-GX is a must. When you play Dedenne-GX onto your Bench, its Dedechange Ability lets you discard your hand and draw 6 cards. Need to do that again? Dedenne-GX’s Tingly Return-GX attack does damage, causes Paralysis, and returns Dedenne-GX to your hand! This Lightning-type cutie won’t be the strongest or sturdiest card in your deck, but it could end up being one of the most useful.

Cleffa

Surrounded by towering Pokémon-GX, Cleffa might not get a lot of attention at first, since it has just 60 HP and no attacks. But in the right situations, this card can make a huge difference. Its Excitable Draw Ability gives you a chance to shuffle your hand away and draw 6 cards based on a coin flip. But if you choose to use this Ability, your turn is over...even if you flip tails and don’t get to draw. Early in the game or as a last-gasp gambit, Cleffa can help get your match on track.

Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX

TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX are an exciting addition to the Pokémon TCG, and Pheromosa and Buzzwole are the first Ultra Beasts to be featured on one of these devastating cards. The pair’s Elegant Sole attack hits for a staggering 190 damage, but they can’t keep that up—when you use the attack, its base damage drops to 60 during your next turn.

Your opponent had better watch out for the Beast Game-GX attack. The 50 damage it inflicts isn’t the real threat here. Instead, it’s the extra Prize card you take when Knocking Out your opponent’s Pokémon that makes this attack worthwhile. And as we saw in Sun & Moon—Team Up, each TAG TEAM gets a special “team bonus” to its GX attack if it has enough extra Energy attached. In this case, if you can attach 7 extra Energy (of any type) to Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX, the GX attack lets you take 3 more Prize cards instead! If you can Knock Out an opponent’s TAG TEAM with Beast Game-GX, you’ll win instantly!

Celesteela-GX

Celesteela-GX is another Ultra Beast that makes an appearance in the Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds expansion, and its Force Canceler Ability will really come in handy when you’re facing off against another Pokémon-GX. As long as Celesteela-GX is your Active Pokémon, this Ability prevents all effects (including damage) from an opponent’s GX attack done to all of your Pokémon.

Like Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX, Celesteela-GX has a GX attack that lets you manipulate Prize cards. With Discovery-GX, you can take all of your Prize cards, put them into your hand, and replace them with cards from the top of your deck. Sure, it may not immediately put you closer to victory, but if you know that a much-needed card is trapped in your Prize cards, this is an easy way to bring it into play.

Beast Bringer

If you’re playing an Ultra Beast in your deck, it would probably be a good idea to have a few Beast Bringer cards in there, as well. When this Pokémon Tool is attached to an Ultra Beast, you can take an extra Prize card if you Knock Out an opponent’s Active Pokémon-GX or Pokémon-EX with damage from that Ultra Beast’s attack. Just be aware that the card’s effect requires you to have exactly 6 Prize cards remaining, so you’ll want to use it early in a match. This card could be especially useful for boosting the effectiveness of Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX’s Beast Game-GX attack.
