An Early Look at Cards from the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Paldean Fates Expansion

Check out Shiny Pokémon like Mew ex, Gardevoir ex, and Paldean Clodsire ex along with other cards from the upcoming expansion.

Things are looking especially shiny in the Pokémon Trading Card Game as the upcoming expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Paldean Fates, features Shiny Pokémon galore. Arriving on January 26, 2024, this expansion includes over 240 cards, over 100 of which are Shiny Pokémon! Join us for an early look at some of these exciting Pokémon along with a couple new Trainer cards that you can find.

Mew ex

  • Illustrator: USGMEN

How adorable is this Shiny Mew ex? Even the (equally adorable) Pokémon that it’s floating above can’t help but look up and smile at its immense cuteness. There’s no feeling blue when this friend is around! You certainly won’t feel blue either when you use Mew ex’s Restart Ability to make sure you’re always holding three cards. It’s good to have options, and Mew ex can give them to you. You’ll also be able to use your opponent’s attacks against them thanks to Mew ex’s Genome Hacking attack. For the cost of three Colorless Energy, you can use one of your opponent’s Active Pokémon’s attacks. Give ’em a taste of their own medicine!

Gardevoir ex

Gardevoir ex is also rocking a Shiny blue color scheme, and it’s looking as elegant as ever on this dazzling card. Perhaps your opponent will be too distracted by all its shimmering stars to see you use Gardevoir ex’s Psychic Embrace Ability. Quickly power up your team with this Ability by attaching Psychic Energy cards from your discard pile to one of your Psychic-type Pokémon. Just remember that doing so also forces you to put two damage counters on that Pokémon. When it’s time to go on the offensive, Gardevoir ex’s Miracle Force attack does 190 damage and lets the Pokémon recover from all Special Conditions.

Paldean Clodsire ex

This Shiny Paldean Clodsire ex certainly looks a bit brighter than it would in the Spiny Fish Pokémon’s standard earthy brown color scheme. Don’t let the cheerier palette fool you, though—this Pokémon can still cause plenty of trouble for your opponents. Its Toxic Wetland Ability, for instance, allows you to make their Active Pokémon Poisoned every turn if a Stadium is in play. You can follow that up with its Needle Bone attack. This attack hits for 200 damage, but a flip of the coin will tell you if Paldean Clodsire ex is able to attack during your next turn. Hopefully you don’t get tails!

Moonlit Hill

Here’s a Stadium card that could potentially prove useful for both Paldean Clodsire ex and Gardevoir ex. Having a Stadium in play, of course, allows Paldean Clodsire ex to make its opponents Poisoned, but Moonlit Hill also helps get Psychic Energy cards into the discard pile, which benefits Gardevoir ex’s Psychic Embrace Ability. This card allows you to discard a Basic Psychic Energy from your hand once per turn in order to heal 30 damage from each of your Pokémon—a handy counter for the damage that Psychic Embrace causes to your team.

Technical Machine: Crisis Punch

When you need to expand your Pokémon’s repertoire of attacks, Technical Machine: Crisis Punch is a good way to deliver a quick blow to your opponent. When you attach this card to one of your Pokémon, it gains access to the Crisis Punch attack, but only until the end of your turn. This attack can only be used when your opponent has exactly one Prize card remaining, and it does a very solid 280 damage. Busting out a powerful attack like this can be very useful when your opponent is so close to winning the game.

You’ll find these and many more cards when the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Paldean Fates expansion releases on January 26, 2024.
