Calvin Connor Claims the TCG Senior Division Title!
07 July, 2013 in Play! Pokémon
Meet the new Pokémon TCG Senior Division U.S. National Champion!
The Senior Division final match proved to be a back-and-forth battle that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. In his first year in the Senior Division, Calvin Connor held on against stiff competition from runner-up Orrin Wilson, who played a surprising and creative deck.
Pokemon.com: Congratulations, Calvin! How are you feeling after the match?
Calvin: I'm feeling excited and happy. I won the last game after time was called.
Pokemon.com: It was an incredible match for the spectators to watch. Let's talk about the first game. You were up 6-1 in Prize cards and ended up losing. What happened?
Calvin: My opponent used an N and left me with one card. From there I had a few bad draws and that gave him time to set up. I maybe could have played better on a turn or two before that. I was in a good position and I was trying to keep the game going for as long as possible so I could see everything in his deck to prepare for the next game.
Pokemon.com: In the next game, it was you who needed late-game help. Explain how that one ended.
Calvin: I needed a Colress Machine to draw a Plasma Energy and power up Absol, and I drew it. He used N to get me down to one card again, and I just didn't see a lot of good cards. Once I got the Plasma Energy, that was game. He was using Enhanced Hammer a lot to knock off all my Special Energy, which slowed me down.
Spectators fill the hall here at the Indiana Convention Center to watch the final matches.
Pokemon.com: Were you getting frustrated watching your opponent use Enhanced Hammer over and over again?
Calvin: No, I just knew that I had to get Thundurus-EX out and use Raiden Knuckle to get Energy out of my discard pile. Once I got that out, I knew I'd get my Energy back eventually. His Sableye was going to get knocked out so he couldn't keep using Junk Hunt to get out his Enhanced Hammer.
Pokemon.com: Most people have been using the Computer Search ACE SPEC card in this deck, but you chose Scramble Switch. How come?
Calvin: I made that decision because it's good against Keldeo/Blastoise decks. If I can take at least three prize cards with my other attackers, then I can bring in Lugia-EX to knock out an opponent's Pokémon-EX for the win.
Pokemon.com: Your opponent's deck was a combination of Darkrai-EX and Garbodor. Were you surprised to see that?
Calvin: Yeah, it's the anti-meta deck. Before the finals, I didn't even know about that deck. It was a total shocker. That's why in the first game I tried to see as much of his deck as I could. You don't see a Darkrai-EX deck running Float Stone and Switch.
Pokemon.com: This is your first year in the Senior Division. How has the competition changed?
Calvin: It was more difficult, but I think I got better over the year.
Pokemon.com: What are your plans to prepare for the World Championships?
Calvin: I'm only going to make a few changes. I played three Keldeo/Blastoise decks in top-cut and won them all. And if I could get through those, I'm feeling good about Worlds.
Pokemon.com: What are you going to do to celebrate as the new champion?
Calvin: I'm going to go home and have a party!
