Introducing the Pokémon TCG Junior Division U.S. National Champion, Carson St. Denis!
Congratulations to the new Junior Division Pokémon TCG U.S. National Champion, Carson St. Denis! Spectators watched Carson on the main stage as he battled against his opponent Hayden Pyritz in the finals. It was a terrific match featuring two talented players, but in the end it was Carson who emerged as the victor. We talked to Carson immediately following his big win.
Pokemon.com: Congratulations on becoming the National Champion, Carson! How do you feel?
Carson: It's a dream.
Pokemon.com: How long have you been playing Pokémon TCG competitively?
Carson: This is my first year, but I'd been collecting cards for a couple years before that.
Pokemon.com: What were your expectations coming to the National Championships?
Carson: I didn't think I was going to do so well. I thought I was going to get knocked out in the Swiss rounds. I went 6-2 in Swiss, so even after I made the top cut, I didn't think I had what it takes. I thought maybe I could make top 8, but kept winning.
Pokemon.com: What cards in your deck were the key to success?
Carson: Lugia-EX. It's been my MVP. It's been beating all the Darkrai. And it gave me the win in the final match.
Carson (right) and Hayden take the stage to play their final match. Noise-canceling headphones allowed them to play without distraction.
Pokemon.com: You and your finals opponent, runner-up Hayden Pyritz, are both from Oregon, and you play against each other pretty often. What was it like to meet him in the finals?
Carson: It feels kinda like we could have just done this at a Battle Road! We're usually about even when we play.
Pokemon.com: Are you excited about heading to the World Championships next month?
Carson: I was already excited after getting my invitation, but the paid travel is awesome.
Pokemon.com: What are your plans for your deck as you plan for Worlds?
Carson: I'm probably going to play mostly the same deck. I'll probably just swap a few cards out.
Pokemon.com: How are you going to celebrate your championship?
Carson: I'm probably going to go play even more Pokémon with my friends!
The two players showed the great sportsmanship typical of all the competitors here at the National Championships.
