OP League Common Questions

Organized Play Leagues are a great way to meet and compete with other Pokémon players. Find out answers to the most common questions about OP Leagues here.

What is a league?

A Pokémon League is a casual, friendly environment where fans of both the Pokémon TCG and the Pokémon video games can meet and play games.

Who runs leagues?

Official Pokémon League Leaders coordinate leagues, and all Pokémon Leagues are hosted in approved kid-friendly locations such as hobby game stores, community centers, and libraries.

How are leagues run?

League cycles last approximately one full year, usually ending in August and starting in September. Each cycle contains eight seasons, and each time you get together to play scheduled league games is a league session. Because fun and participation are the focus of a Pokémon League, players earn the same stamps and awards no matter whether they win or lose the games they play.

How long is a league season?

League seasons generally last between a month and six weeks. Most leagues meet once a week for a few hours. The League Leader schedules and advertises meeting times, duration, and location of each league.

What do I need to bring to a league?

Players should bring their own deck of Pokémon TCG cards as well as their Nintendo™ DS and Pokémon DS games to play with. Many players bring extra cards along to trade.

How much does a league cost to enter?

The majority of leagues are free, but some may charge a nominal fee per season or session to cover rental of the league space. This is rarely more than $20 a season.

What can I earn at a league?

Pokémon Organized Play supplies League Leaders with prizes like promotional cards and DS skins to be awarded to players that participate in enough league games. These items are free to the League Leaders, and are never sold at the league. Many of these prizes are specific to the league season and are unavailable after that league season is over.

Are there leagues in my area?

There are hundreds of leagues across North America and Europe, and many large cities have several leagues in different locations.

How do I find them?

The Pokémon Organized Play website hosts a League Locator. This is the best tool for finding leagues, as all official leagues are listed there.

How can I help get leagues started in my area?

If there is no league in your area, you can contact your local hobby game store about applying to host a league. Many league stores use a volunteer to help coordinate the league, and if you are old enough and interested, you might make a great League Leader!
